“Metallurgists have a big role to play in the development of the nation. Their contributions are even more relevant now, when the nation is going through a phase of growth.” said Union Minister of Steel, Shri Beni Prasad Verma at the 51st National Metallurgist Day celebrations organized by Indian Institute of Metals (IIM) in Varanasi today.
Shri Verma spoke about the successes achieved by the Indian steel and metals industry. Further elaborating on the steps taken by the Government he said, “We are in the final stages of finalization of New National Steel Policy to increase the country’s steel capacity to 300 million tons per annum. A Roadmap on R&D and Technology for the industry has also been released.”
Further elaborating on the challenges before the industry he said, “I feel that environment friendly steel production is a big part of the philosophy of Indian steel manufacturers. We need to take this forward by focusing on ‘Green Steel’ production.”
He expressed his hope that the celebrations would constantly remind metallurgist of their responsibility towards the society and help them find viable solutions to challenges.
On the occasion he felicitated Shri Saibal Kant Gupta, Director JSW Steel Ltd. with the Lifetime Achievement award, Shri Ashok Kumar, Chief Raw Material and Iron Making Technology Group, Tata Steel Ltd. with the National Metallurgist (Industry) award and Dr. G Sundarajan with the National Metallurgist (Research & Academia) award. In addition to these, Metallurgist of the Year, Young Metallurgist of the year awards were also presented by Shri Beni Prasad Verma.
Also present on the occasion were Secretary, Ministry of Steel, Shri G. Mohan Kumar, Chairman, SAIL, Shri C.S. Verma, President of IIM, Prof. K Chattopadhyay, Chairman Organising Committee, Prof. Sastry and officials of IIM.
