Tamil Nadu wants airport terminal named after MGR


Chennai, April 15 (IANS) The Tamil Nadu assembly Monday passed a resolution urging the central government to name the newly-built second domestic terminal at the airport here after AIADMK founder and later chief minister M.G. Ramachandran (MGR).
Moving the resolution, Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa said: "Recently, the civil aviation minister (Ajit Singh) wrote to me saying that naming of the terminal will be considered by the centre if the request comes from the state government with the approval of the Tamil Nadu assembly."
Jayalalithaa said she had accepted the invitation from the central government to participate in the inauguration of the second domestic terminal Jan 31 that was inaugurated by Vice President M. Hamid Ansari.
She said the centre did not respond to her request to name the second domestic terminal after MGR and announced the same ahead of the inaugural function.
Jayalalithaa said as per protocol she received Ansari at the airport and announced the reason for not participating in that function through a statement.
She said the international and domestic terminals had earlier been named after former chief ministers C.N. Annadurai and K. Kamaraj, respectively.
MGR, founder of the AIADMK, was chief minister of Tamil Nadu from 1977 till his death a decade later.
